Causes
Interested in worthwhile organizations that could use your skills? Here are a few of my favorites.
- Save Grant Park
Remember that gathering of thousands in the very center of Chicago on election night? It was possible because Chicagoans have preserved legally-protected open space in the center of the city. Save Grant Park, winner of the IVI-IPO 2009 Harold Washington Award for grassroots organizing, is working now to prevent illegal construction in this precious park. I'm a director, webmaster, fundraiser and what-ever-else-needs-to-be-doner. If you are interested in fundraising and community organizing, join us! - Recording for the Blind and Dyslexic
Imagine attending school without having books. Students whose disabilities prevent them from using conventional books are at tremendous disadvantage. Whatever your profession, you can enable others by reading textbooks for this recorded library. Readers with speacialized knowledge, such as mathemetics, are always needed. Studios are located throughout the United States. - Preservation Chicago
Devoted to local architecural preservation, these are the folks who issue the annual "Chicago 7" Most Endangered Buildings list, and the leadership of the movement that saved the iconic old Cook County Hospital building (the one you saw on "ER") from the wrecking ball. I recently developed a fundraising manual for them, and they can use your help fundraising and organizing. - Pianoforte Foundation
Sponsors of over seventy small-venue classical, jazz and experimental music concerts each year, including weekly free concerts broadcast live on WFMT, Pianoforte Foundation is a new and vibrant force on the Chicago music scene. I'm consulting with them now on bulding their supporter list. They can use volunteers interested in building membership.
